Replacing a bathtub with a shower in Spain
It is the most requested bathroom job in Spain and the one most often sold as "done in a day". It can be done well and fast, but it is worth knowing what sits behind the tub first.

Short answer
What the job actually includes
Replacing a bathtub with a shower tray is not swapping one item for another. It includes removing the tub and its tiled skirt, adapting the waste pipe to the position and height of the new tray, waterproofing the shower zone, tiling the perimeter the tub was hiding, and fitting tray, tap, screen and seals. Two things set the price: the drain and the tiling. If the tray is ultra-flat and the existing waste sits high, the floor has to be built up or a low-profile trap used; and if the bathroom tile is discontinued, the new perimeter will never match. A realistic timeline is three to five working days including curing time. For scale, a full bathroom in Barcelona runs 3,200–9,500 € over 10–18 days; the swap is a fraction of that unless it drags the whole tiling with it.
The trap for a foreign owner is treating it as a purchase rather than as building work. Behind the tub there are unfinished walls and a drain set at the wrong height for a modern tray.
What you cannot see
Drain, fall and waterproofing
| Critical point | What happens | How it is solved | If it is done badly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drain height | A tub discharges higher than an ultra-flat tray | Low-profile trap, raised base, or a taller tray | Water drains slowly or stands in the tray |
| Fall | The tray sits on a base that must be dead level | Levelled base; a tiled tray needs fall to the gully | Standing water, or a slope you feel underfoot |
| Waterproofing | It is the only layer between you and the flat below | Sheet or liquid membrane taken up the walls | The leak shows downstairs and your insurer pays |
| Perimeter | The wall the tub covered was never finished | Tile the strip, or retile the wall entirely | A joint mid-wall and tile that does not match |
The drain outranks the catalogue
This is checked on the first visit, before anyone talks about models. With little run to the soil stack, the ultra-flat tray from the photo stops being an option. Better to learn that on quote day than on demolition day.
Curing is not dead time
The membrane needs its days before anything is laid on it. "Shower in a day" offers usually fit a system over the existing recess without redoing the waterproofing. That works, and it is not the same thing.
The legal layer
Permits, the comunidad and who pays for a leak
Comunicación previa, not a licence
Without touching layout or structure, this is minor works: you notify the council rather than apply for a permit, and you can normally start straight away. Your contractor handles the filing. Ask for a copy — it is the document that proves the work was declared if you ever sell.
Comunidad means the owners association
Every flat in a Spanish block belongs to a comunidad de propietarios, run by an administrador de fincas. You do not need its permission for a bathroom swap, but you do have to tell it: skip runs through the shared entrance, rubble goes down in the lift, and most buildings have quiet hours in their internal rules.
Rubble is regulated
Debris cannot go in a normal bin. It goes to an authorised waste manager and the receipt should be part of what you are given at the end. If a quote does not mention rubble removal, it will appear later as an extra.
The leak question
If the shower leaks into the flat below, it is your work and your liability, not the building’s — the vertical soil stack is communal, but everything from your wall inwards is yours. This is precisely why the waterproofing photo matters more than any guarantee wording.
Choosing
Which tray and which screen
Tray material
Mineral resin is the default here: warm underfoot, non-slip and cuttable on site, which is its real advantage in old flats where walls are not parallel. Ceramic is harder and cheaper but cold, and it comes in fixed sizes you have to design around.
Use the whole recess
A tray that fills the full tub opening gives a genuinely comfortable shower and costs little more than a short one. Narrowing the shower to gain a 40 cm cabinet is the decision owners regret fastest.
Screen and access
A fixed panel with no door is the cleanest option and the one that breaks least, provided the tray is long. Tempered glass with an anti-limescale treatment is worth it: Barcelona water is hard and untreated glass clouds within a couple of years.
Running it from abroad
Verifying work you will never see again
The shower is the part of a flat that receives the most water and can be inspected the least once finished. If you are not in Spain during the works, the verification has to be built into the schedule rather than attempted at the end.
The two photos that matter
- The bare recess after the tub comes out, showing the state of the wall and the waste position
- The finished waterproofing membrane, dated, before a single tile goes on
Put the specification in writing
Tray material and exact dimensions, trap type, how far the membrane rises up the walls, and whether the perimeter is being tiled or the whole wall. Ambiguity in an email becomes a decision made without you on site.
Time it to an empty flat
Three to five days without a bathroom is disruptive for a tenant and irrelevant in an empty flat. If the property is let, the changeover window between tenancies is the cheapest time to do this, and the only one that removes the pressure to skip curing days.
Frequently asked
Common questions
Three to five working days, including setting and curing of the waterproofing. One-day offers generally fit a system over the existing recess without redoing the membrane underneath, which is a different job with a different lifespan.
At minimum the perimeter the tub was covering, which is almost never finished behind it. If the original tile is discontinued it will not match, and then the choice is a full wall or the whole bathroom. Check the tile reference before demolition starts.
It depends on the drain. A tub discharges higher, so with insufficient run to the soil stack you need a low-profile trap, a raised base or a taller tray. In older buildings with ceramic vault floors the depth below the tiles is limited and is checked with a small opening.
Without touching layout or structure it is minor works under a comunicación previa, filed with the council. You do not need the comunidad’s approval, but you must notify it about rubble and lift use, and respect the building’s quiet hours.
You do. The vertical soil stack is a communal element, but the shower and its waterproofing are inside your property, so damage downstairs falls to you and your home insurance. A dated photo of the finished membrane is the best evidence the work was done properly.

Common mistakes
Very few renovation mistakes are dramatic. Most are small decisions taken quickly, in the wrong order, that you then live with for fifteen years.
Open or closed kitchen
The decision is presented as a matter of taste. It is mostly a matter of how you cook, how the flat is built, and what you will do with the property in ten years.
Underfloor heating
The most comfortable heating system there is, and the one that fits worst into an existing Barcelona flat. Both statements are true at once.
Space in small flats
Small flats rarely lack space. They lack usable space, and the difference is almost always the corridor, the doors and the ceiling height nobody has used.
