The honest unit of comparison
The linear metre — floor-to-ceiling, doors and interior included — is the number that lets you compare quotes. When one quote looks dramatically cheaper, it is almost always measuring something else: no doors, an empty carcass, or a wardrobe that stops half a metre short of the ceiling.

Flat-pack modular wardrobes win on price when the opening is standard: round widths, 2.50 m ceilings, square walls. That opening barely exists in Barcelona’s older housing stock.

The wardrobe fixes to the walls, never to the floor: screwing runners into original encaustic tiles is an irreversible scar on a floor that cannot be bought new. And where walls carry mouldings or panelling, the joinery is fabricated around them — cutting original plasterwork to fit a catalogue module is the kind of decision a future buyer prices in as a discount.

Doors are what you look at when buying; the interior is what you live with daily. A large, badly organised wardrobe holds less than a medium one planned well.

- Double hanging rails where clothes are short: doubles capacity in the same width
- Drawers for small items: t-shirts and underwear on open shelves is guaranteed mess
- A deep top section for seasonal storage: suitcases and duvets up high, not in the hallway
- A pull-out shoe rack low down: shoes on the wardrobe floor steal a third of the space
- 60 cm depth for hanging; 45 cm only works for shelves and folded clothes

Joinery is one of the easiest trades to run from abroad, because everything that matters can be fixed in writing and checked in photographs.
If it is part of a renovation
- Sockets and switches move before the walls close: a wardrobe in front of a socket is a socket lost
- The final measure happens late in the works, with floors and walls finished, so the fit is exact
- Lacquer is matched to the interior doors: matching joinery is what makes a flat read as designed
- If air conditioning is planned, duct runs are coordinated with the top section so you do not lose it
If there is no renovation around it
It is a clean intervention: measure, workshop fabrication, one or two days of fitting — no rubble down the stairwell, no municipal filing. For a flat between tenants or just purchased, it is one of the few improvements with immediate effect that opens no walls, and the whole cycle fits comfortably between two visits or none at all.
What to ask for in writing and in photos
- Brand and model of runners and hinges, not just the word quality
- Interior elevation drawing with drawer count, rail heights and top-box depth
- A photo of the final on-site measure sheet before fabrication starts
- Photos at fitting: level check, door alignment and the reveal against ceiling and walls
What it does for letting and resale
In listings a fitted wardrobe counts as armario empotrado — a real market argument in a country where flats come without storage. More than raising the price, it removes the mental discount a buyer applies on seeing that wardrobes are missing; and a rental flat with fitted storage lets faster than the same flat without.
