What a kitchen renovation costs in Barcelona

A kitchen is two projects sharing a room: the building work and the furniture. Most budget shocks come from pricing one and forgetting the other.

Short answer

How much does a kitchen renovation cost?

A complete kitchen in Barcelona runs from €4,500 to €16,000, with most jobs settling around €7,900 and taking 12–25 working days on site. Roughly half the figure is building work and services, the other half units and worktop. Bespoke units take four to eight weeks to manufacture, so they are ordered before demolition starts, not during — that sequencing error is the most common cause of a kitchen running weeks late.

ElementShare of totalOn a mid-range kitchenWhen it is decided
Building work, services, tiling30–35 % labouraround €2,607At the technical visit
Units, worktop and internal fittings30–40 %around €2,7654–8 weeks in advance
Plumbing and electrical materials10–14 %around €948With the layout
AppliancesUsually excludedBought separatelyBefore fitting week
Complete kitchen100 %€4,500–€16,00012–25 working days

The spread is wider than any other room in the house because the units and worktop can cost anything from a fraction of the total to more than half of it. This is also why two kitchen quotes are so hard to compare: one firm may be pricing the room, the other the furniture.

What that figure includes

  • Full strip-out of units, tiling and old flooring, with licensed waste disposal
  • New plumbing runs, including a dedicated feed and waste for the dishwasher
  • Electrical installation with separate circuits for hob, oven and small appliances
  • Wall and floor tiling or continuous flooring
  • Base and wall units, worktop and splashback
  • Sink, tap and extraction ducted to the existing shaft
  • Fitting and commissioning of appliances supplied

What sits outside almost every quote

The appliances themselves, work on the communal soil stack or ventilation shaft, structural work if you are opening the kitchen to the living room, and gas certification if you are keeping or moving a gas supply. These four are the usual source of a mid-project increase.

Breakdown

Where does the money actually go?

An indicative split for a kitchen of around 8–10 m² to mid specification. It is worth checking your quote against it, because an unbalanced distribution is usually a sign that something has been left out.

Typical distribution

  • Units, worktop and internal fittings: 30–40 % of the total
  • Labour across all trades: 30–35 %
  • Plumbing and electrical materials: 10–14 %
  • Tiling and flooring: 8–12 %
  • Sink, tap and extraction: 5–8 %
  • Strip-out and licensed waste disposal: 4–7 %

Where the money is well spent

Drawer runners and hinges, the worktop material, and the extraction. These are the parts you operate several times a day and the parts that are most disruptive to replace later. Quartz or a compact surface outlasts laminate by years in a kitchen that gets real use.

Where it usually is not

Handleless push-to-open doors on lower cabinets, integrated appliance fronts on units you will open constantly, and full-height glass splashbacks. All add cost, all add maintenance, and none of them change how the kitchen works.

What adds cost

Why two kitchens the same size cost differently

Moving the sink

The sink has to drain into the soil stack with enough fall. Moving it across the room means a longer waste run under the units or a raised plinth, and beyond a certain distance a pump. Sinks are the reason many attractive layouts are quietly abandoned.

Opening the kitchen to the living room

If the dividing wall is not loadbearing this is straightforward. If it is, you need a technical project, calculations, propping, a steel beam and a licence, and the kitchen ceases to be the main cost of the job.

Extraction and the communal shaft

Older Barcelona buildings often run a single shared ventilation shaft. Connecting a powerful extractor into it can require owners association consent, and in some buildings it is not permitted at all, which forces a recirculating hood with a carbon filter.

Gas versus induction

Moving to induction usually means increasing the contracted electrical supply. Below about 3.45 kW you cannot run an induction hob and an oven together. Uprating the supply is a separate application to the distributor, and it needs electrical certification.

Bespoke units

Made-to-measure joinery takes four to eight weeks to manufacture. That is not a cost problem, it is a programme problem — and it becomes a cost problem when the whole site stands idle waiting for a delivery that was ordered too late.

If you are abroad

Can a kitchen be replaced while you are away?

Yes, and it is one of the easier jobs to run remotely, because almost every decision can be made from a drawing and a specification list before anyone lifts a tool. The difficulty is never the distance — it is unresolved choices.

What has to be settled before work begins

  • Unit layout and worktop material agreed on a measured drawing
  • Every appliance chosen by model, so the openings are built to the right dimensions
  • Socket and light positions marked on the same drawing
  • Appliance delivery arranged and stored, or delivery accepted on your behalf
  • Access agreed with the building manager, a neighbour or a key holder

The one thing worth insisting on

Photographs of every wall with the pipework and cabling exposed, taken before the walls are closed and the units go on. It costs nothing, it takes ten minutes, and it is the difference between hanging a shelf confidently in three years and drilling into a water pipe.

Frequently asked

Common questions

From €4,500 to €16,000, with most jobs around €7,900. That covers strip-out, new services, tiling, flooring, units, worktop, sink, tap and extraction, but not the appliances.

Between 12 and 25 working days on site, typically around 18. The bespoke units are the long lead item and must be ordered before the strip-out starts, not after.

Usually 30 to 40 per cent of the total for units, worktop and internal fittings. That share is what makes kitchen quotes so hard to compare: two firms can price identical building work and differ by thousands on the joinery alone.

It depends entirely on whether the dividing wall is loadbearing. If it is not, it is a simple job. If it is, expect a technical project, structural calculations, a steel beam and a municipal licence, which changes the budget significantly.

Often yes. Below roughly 3.45 kW of contracted power you cannot run an induction hob and an oven at the same time. Uprating means a separate application to the distributor and electrical certification for the new installation.
