Kitchen renovation

Kitchen opened to the living room, with island

Opening a kitchen to the living room is easy to draw and hard to build: ventilation, water and waste have to reach the middle of the room, and you have to decide what is visible from the sofa. Extraction drives everything, because the duct has to come out somewhere.

The starting point

What we found

A kitchen opened to the living room around a central island, done as part of a home renovation. The kitchen stopped being a closed room and became part of the living space: a continuous worktop, an island with hob and extractor, and storage in a tall run so the front is not filled with wall units.

What we did

The work, step by step

  1. 01The wall between kitchen and living room opened, with no beam left showing
  2. 02Central island with hob and sink, services routed through the floor
  3. 03Extractor ducted through the suspended ceiling to the existing outlet
  4. 04Storage concentrated in a tall run, keeping the island front clear
  5. 05Continuous worktop with no visible joints
  6. 06Lighting in three layers: general, over the worktop and ambient in the living room
  7. 07One continuous floor across kitchen and living room, with no change of material
