A neighbour’s noise does not only travel through the air, it travels through the structure. Sticking a thin insulation board to the wall changes almost nothing, because the problem is the stiffness of the assembly, not the thickness of the material.

The starting point
What we found
Soundproofing a party wall from inside the flat: an independent stud lining held off the wall, mineral wool in the cavity and a double plasterboard skin with staggered joints. You lose a few centimetres of room and gain the silence that no thin panel stuck to the wall will give you.

The work, step by step
- 01A check first on where the noise actually comes through: party wall, floor, services or socket boxes
- 02An independent stud lining, not touching the existing wall, on a resilient strip
- 03High-density mineral wool filling the whole cavity
- 04Double plasterboard with staggered joints and acoustic sealant around the perimeter
- 05Socket boxes offset so the lining is not pierced at the same point
- 06Service penetrations sealed, since that is where the remaining noise gets in
- 07Skirting and trims fixed without rigid bridges back to the wall
Outcome
How it ended
The room loses a few centimetres and gains a step in insulation that stuck-on panels cannot reach. This case has no site photographs.
